This is an interesting story from Oneida County in Utica, NY. It seems the local authorities have decided to charge cell phone users 30c per month to fund the 911 service. New York residents already pay $0.35/month on their landline for 911, and $1.20 per month to New York State for the enhanced 911 service.

This new charge would bring the total monthly charge for 911 access to $1.85, since most people own a cell phone. While 911 is an essential service, shouldn’t it be funded out of the general state taxes? It seems the USA’s user-pays mentality is slowly getting out of hand.
